Veganism is a trending word in the wellness industry. Many people are genuinely interested in the idea and are looking for smart ways to switch to a vegan way of life. It would be the health concerns addressed by vegan diets that some find interesting while others choose veganism for ethical reasons.

People who follow a vegan lifestyle avoid all products that involve some form of exploitation or cruelty to animals. Vegans say no to all animal products that were made by harming the animals in some way.

Although veganism is not an altogether new concept, several misconceptions exist about it. In this article, we attempt to debunk some common vegan myths.

Myth 1: You Do Not Get Enough Protein From A Vegan Diet

Meat is a rich source of protein but excluding it from our diet does not mean that we are left with no protein sources.  Legumes, lentils, peanuts, and beans are packed with proteins and adding them to the diet can provide us our daily protein source.

Myth 2: Pregnant Women Should Not Be Vegan

It is very important to get adequate nutrition during pregnancy but you do not have to quit your diet type just because you are expecting, provided you are eating a well-rounded diet and taking the necessary supplements. Pregnant vegans have to discuss their diet with their doctor and see a nutritionist who specializes in prenatal nutrition.

Myth 3: Vegans Do Not Get Sick

Including more fruits, vegetables and whole grains in the diet will improve the health of vegans and non-vegans. Plant-based diets are known to lower the risk of heart disease and cancer but that does not mean that vegans are immune to all diseases.

Vegans also get sick like non-vegans and the idea that vegans never get sick is a myth.

Myth 4: Vegans Need Less Calcium

As meaty diets are linked to low bone density, some vegans develop a false belief that they do not need much calcium, the mineral that is mostly consumed to boost bone health.

Getting enough calcium from diets is not very easy for vegans as it is for non-vegans because veganism does not allow one to take dairy products. Vegans have to find out appropriate non-dairy sources of calcium to ensure that their bone health is stable.

Myths surrounding veganism lead to people having over-the-top expectations from it or deciding to never try it at all. Debunking them is important to ensure that people understand the concept just the way it is.
